A better cure to this is by attaching a rope that is also attached to a heavy object that will prevent the front foot from striding more. You can also try placing a bucket or broom in the back of the front foot so that whenever the hitter felt he has stepped or moved the bucket/broom, he'll know that he has stepped in to the bucket.
